While I was writing the book, I did a decent amount of research about pets with disabilities--in part because Faith, our dog, suffered from a sprained wrist for a long, long time--in part, thanks to her extra weight.  She also had surgery on a cyst that might have been, but turned out not to be, cancerous.  I thanks my stars every day.
