The AKC recently announced that the Labrador retriever is now A-number one dog in the hearts of America. And they are, mostly, awesome. But they are also very prone to hip dysplasia and arthritis, and, like most large breed dogs, require careful, careful feeding when they are puppies so they don't put on weight. Keep them lean, people, if you want them to live long and move well...
And meanwhile, in Great Britain, Rusty, a Lab who blew up to 162 pounds ended up in court, along with his negligent owners. Rusty was so big and so riddled with arthritis, he couldn't stand up for very long without collapsing.
There's a happy ending to this story...thanks to intervention from the animal rescue sociey, Rusty lost almost 50 pounds, and is moving around...now, can his owners keep him healthy?
Let's hope.
